Games wise, if you like Pokemon and don't mind oldschool stuff, I would actually suggest giving Dragon Quest Monsters a shot! However if you would also like the more traditional RPG experience, Dragon Quest IX's story is standalone, so you don't have to worry about missing out on lore or anything like that. It's a fantastic little game and well worth giving a go!
