Question

Is it a general rule that when you're passing cards back and forth between players, you use images hosted on

It just occured to me that some people might save images directly from the comments to their hard drives, and "waterpistol01" is a better file name to have than opening image in a new tab and finding out it's called "https://64.media.tumblr.com/413a88a11776ea5d18e96c94e59377d5/77462cfedbf15d2d-d3/s75x75_c1/bba2214ac69dbaa7d36f84d01fe4534fd607c82d.gifv"

Or do you all clutter up your hard drive with every card you want, only uploading them to your list when you acquire them, and showing a lineup of cards in a comment is only a signifier that those cards have been traded?

hii !! :^D
yeah playing colors involves saving lots and lots of images.... it is technically allowed to direct link to images from the official colors website, but usually people will keep all their cards in some sort of image hosting service! my card post is a neocities site so I use the built in image hosting on neocities but there are tons of other options for image hosting too

people don't tend to save card images until they have officially acquired that card (like, the other person agreed to the trade and presented the cards without any issues, or you received your cards as rewards for a game). I like to keep my hard drive super organized with folders for each month / day, so my cards won't get lost.

basically consider the card images as Actual Physical Cards. you only really need to use them when you're handing a card off to someone or taking a card from someone. For things like wishlists, etc, it's best to either keep it in text form, or to use the deck's empty image, like this one:

because people will assume that if you are presenting a card image, that you actually have that card. hopefully that makes sense lol !!!

P.S. i super recommend joining the colors discord, everyone is super nice + active + eager to help out new players !!

if you end up getting your trade post hosted on a non-neocities site (like how mine is set up), your host can set you up with something called etcg that has an option to automatically upload the cards you get from the colors site itself, so you don't even have to worry about manually saving the cards themselves to your computer.

but yea direct linking from colors is technically allowed, and there are a few folks who have tools on their sites where you can input a list of cards and it'll generate the image tags for them. so if you didn't want to take the time to download, upload, and type out image tags, you can instead just take the list of cards you need and plug it into one of those. i use gloomlee's because i can either grab straight from colors (you'd want to use https://colors-tcg.eu/cards/ as where the cards are hosted) or my own site, but i know there's other colors img tag generators out there.

like rocky said, joining the discord is a good idea. lots of folks who are happy to help out there, and there's a few people who offer hosting if you're looking to host your trade post off of dreamwidth (there's people who also know their way around neocities if you want to go with that for off-site hosting too).
